As April draws to a close, and the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the United States approaches one million, the impact on local governments is gradually coming into sharper focus. Widespread declines in transit, pressing demands on medical resources, the difficulties of administering programs and policies while most staff remain at home, and a variety of other challenges unique to each locality are beginning to take their toll.
In this new series exploring the impact of Covid-19 on local governments, I will explore some of the financial, administrative, technical, and legal challenges local governments will face in the coming weeks, months, and years as we recover from this pandemic.
